Artist's Biography:Cicero Dias (Escada, Pernambuco, 1907 - Paris, 2003). Painter, engraver, draughtsman, illustrator, scenographer. Began studying drawing in Pernambuco. In 1920, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he enrolled in courses in architecture and painting at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes - Enba [National School of Fine Arts] in 1925, but did not finish them. He came into contact with the Modernist group, and in 1929, collaborated on the magazine, Revista de Antropofagia [Anthropophagy Review]. In 1931, at the Salão Revolucionário [Revolutionary Salon], at Enba, he exhibited the controversial panel, both for its size and for its subject matter, Eu Vi o Mundo... Ele Começava no Recife [I saw the world, it began in Recife]. From 1932 onwards, he gave classes in drawing in his studio. In 1933, he illustrated Casa Grande & Senzala [The Masters and the Slaves] by Gilberto Freyre (1900 - 1987). In 1937, with the decreeing of the Estado Novo, he was arrested in Recife. Following this, and encouraged byDi Cavalcanti (1897 - 1976), he went to Paris, where he met Georges Braque (1882 - 1963), Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954), Fernand Léger (1881 - 1955) and Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), with whom he made friends. In 1942, he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Baden-Baden, in Germany. From 1943 to 1945, he lived in Lisbon as Cultural Attaché to the Brazilian Embassy. He then returned to Paris, where he joined the abstract group, Espace. In 1948, he executed the mural for the building of the Secretariat of Finance of the State of Pernambuco, considered the first abstract work of its kind in Latin America. In 1965, he received the tribute of a special salon at the Bienal Internacional de São Paulo [São Paulo International Bienal]. In 1991, he inaugurated a 20 metre panel at the Brigadeiro metro station in São Paulo. In Rio de Janeiro, the Cicero Dias Room was opened at the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes - MNBA [National Museum of Fine Arts]. In 1998, at the age of 91, he received the National Order of Merit from the French government.
