Artist's
Biography:Studied in the College of St. Catherine and at the Academy of
Fine Arts in Venice. In January of 1868 he left his hometown for an
educational trip that takes him first to Florence, where he meet Nino
Costa, then in Rome and Naples, where he worked for several months in
contact with the artists of the School of Posillipo and School of resin
as well as Filippo Palizzi. In early 1869 he was back in Venice: the
subjects of his paintings are those of the Venetian lagoon and from the
countryside of Treviso.
In 1874 he married Linda Locatelli and had 4 children, two of them
became artists (Beppe Ciardi, landscape, realistic, and Emma Ciardi).
Maintains contact with the main centers of Italian art: Florence, Turin,
Milan, Genoa, Rome and Naples and is often present in international
events of the time as the Third International Art Exhibition in Venice
in 1899.
Since 1885, he spent the summer in various places in the Dolomites, and
so his painting is enhanced by a new subject, mountains. In 1894 he was
awarded the chair of the School of country and sea views at the Academy
of Fine Arts where he remained until his death.
Acclaimed by audiences and critics do not grasp how his mood over the
past 800 years, loss of sharpness and strength of inspiration. He
continues to work tirelessly and to travel until the forces supporting
him: his legs paralyzed, died Oct. 5, 1917 in Venice.
He has exhibited his works in major art exhibitions like the Venice
Biennale. Some of his works are preserved in the collections of the
historical and artistic heritage of the Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo.
