Artist's Biography:Tarsila do Amaral (Capivari, São Paulo, 1886 - São Paulo, 1973). Painter, draughtswoman. Studied sculpture with William Zadig (1884 - 1952) and Mantovani, in São Paulo in 1916. In the following year, she took painting and drawing classes with Pedro Alexandrino (1856 - 1942), where she met Anita Malfatti (1889 - 1964). Both took classes with the painter, Georg Elpons (1865 - 1939). In 1920, she went to Paris, where she studied at the Académie Julian and with Émile Renard (1850 - 1930). On returning to São Paulo, in 1922, she formed the Grupo dos Cinco [Group of the Five] with Anita Malfatti, Mário de Andrade (1893 - 1945), Menotti del Picchia (1892 - 1988) and Oswald de Andrade (1890 - 1954). In 1923, again in Paris, she frequented the studio of André Lhote (1885 - 1962), Albert Gleizes (1881 - 1953) and Fernand Léger (1881 - 1955). She came into contact with the poet, Blaise Cendrars (1887 - 1961), who introduced her to Constantin Brancusi (1876 - 1957), Vollard, Jean Cocteau (1889 - 1963), Erik Satie and others. After returning to Brazil, in the following year, together with Oswald de Andrade, Olívia Guedes Penteado (1872 - 1934), Mário de Andrade and others, she accompanied the poet, Blaise Cendrars, on a journey to the historic cities of Minas Gerais, making sketches on which she subsequently based a series of works. During this period, she initiated the so-called 'Pau Brasil' [Brazil Wood] phase, in which she submerged herself in national themes. In 1925, she illustrated the book of poems, Pau-Brasil, by Oswald de Andrade, which was published in Paris. In 1928, she painted Abaporu, a canvas that inspired the movimento antropofágico [Anthropophagy Movement], launched by Oswald de Andrade and Raul Bopp (1898 - 1984). In 1933, after a journey to the Soviet Union, she began a phase directed towards social themes, with the works Operários[Workers] and 2ª Classe [2nd Class]. In 1936 she began to write a column on art in the Diário de São Paulo. At the invitation of the Commission for the 4th Centenary Celebrations of São Paulo, in 1954, she executed the panel, Procissão do Santíssimo [Procession of the Most Holy], and in 1956, delivered O Batizado de Macunaíma [The Baptism of Macunaíma] on the work of Mário de Andrade, to the publisher, Livraria Martins Editora. The retrospective, Tarsila: 50 anos de pintura [Tarsila: 50 Years of Painting], organised by the art critic, Aracy Amaral, and presented at the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro - MAM/RJ [Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro] and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo - MAC/USP [Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo], in 1969, aided to consolidate the importance of the artist.
